Terry Lundgren
Terry Lundgren is chairman, president and CEO of Macy’s Inc., the largest department store group in the United States.
He is best known as the architect of the national department store chain, having orchestrated Federated Department Stores’ $17 billion merger with May Co. in 2005 and rebranding the mammoth group under the Macy’s name.
The tall and dapper Lundgren aspired to be a veterinarian but abandoned that dream for a lifelong career in retailing. After graduating from the University of Arizona in 1974, he started as a trainee at Bullock’s, a division of Federated Department Stores. With time, he rose to president and CEO of the Bullock’s Wilshire upscale unit. He later joined luxury retailer Neiman Marcus and became chairman and CEO there. In 1994, he returned to Federated and ten years later was named chairman, president and CEO.
While the Federated-May merger gave the newly named Macy’s unprecedented clout with vendors, Lundgren took heat from loyal shoppers for the loss of regional nameplates such Marshall Field’s in Chicago and Filene’s in Boston. Not satisfied with a cookie-cutter approach to a national department store brand, Lundgren, in 2008, unveiled My Macy’s, a program designed to tailor a portion of merchandise to local market preferences.
